Samuel David Leidesdorf –
A Man of Many Nations

Sam Leidesdorf was a self-made man, earning his wealth through the success of his own accounting firm, S. D. Leidesdorf & Co. of New York. This enabled him to affiliate with the very elite in the U.S. during the early-to-mid 1900s, including the likenesses of the Roosevelt and Rockefeller families. He was a close personal friend of Albert Einstein's. 

Sam set the standard for philanthropy, helping institutions which have long outlived himself and have helped people around the world of different races and religions. As a master fundraiser, he provided leadership for organizations including the United Negro College Fund, United Jewish Appeal, the University Hospital and the 92nd Street YMHA (Young Men’s Hebrew Association), the later located in New York City.
 
Samuel D. Leidesdorf Way is named for him in New York City.
