Ask the Expert

Expert Question: I know that my grandfather was from Bielsk, Poland, but have that there are three towns by this name.  How do I figure out which one is correct?

Expert Answer:  You need to focus on finding documents that confirm (or list in the case of unknown places) the place your relatives were from. They may show the larger area (a gubernia in Poland) that Bielsk is in, thereby pointing you to which one they were from. There are lots of options for this including ship's passengers lists, census records, naturalization records, vital records, etc.

The following article will provide some guidance in focusing your research towards this goal:  Using a Research Outline to Focus Your Genealogical Research.
