Expert Question: My father remembers his grandmother receiving a check, possibly from the U.S. government, because she was part Indian. This would have been in the 1930s.  Any suggestions as to why she received this check?

Expert Answer: According to the U.S. Department of Interior, "There has long been a myth that Indians receive a monthly check from the U.S. Government because of their status as Indians. There is no basis for this belief other than misinformation and misconception of the status of American Indians."  You can read more about it at http://www.doi.gov/benefits.html
